I think it's pretty bad manners to be discussing stealing music on the tribe of an artist who makes a living selling music. Hopefully you folks are discussing downloading mp3's that have been freely released.

Who says downloading is stealing? In my books downloading for FREE is legit … I’ll go see the artists I love live when they come to town. That way I know the money is going to them and not a record company that scams people … (ticket master should be the next huge corporation to go and their time is coming soon I hope)

Downloading any media is legit in my books and I recommend and encourage everyone to do it … why the hell should Apple make 1 billion dollars a year (plus some) from charging $1 for downloading music … I think people who actually pay for downloading are idiots (no offense to anyone) … they are supporting conglomerates and throwing their money away … you want to support the artist then here is an idea … write them a check for whatever you thought you downloaded and send it to them directly … you will sleep well at night trust me

Were you aware that the record companies lost two major lawsuits around 1999 which stated that they had been price fixing and for monopolizing practices for the past 15 years … they were charged a few million dollars as a penalty. Now here is the kicker … who got that money? It wasn’t the end user. And what the hell is a few million when you fixed prices for 15 years … they raked in billions of dollars from people who bought CD’s … scam … I say they made their money and now its time for them to die a good death … they screwed the consumer for a long time … time for the artists to make money by touring and time for the in-between leeches who raise prices and take the major share of the profits to get lost … any artist that disagrees with this is way behind the times and uninformed …

Stop feeding the corporate machine and start supporting artists … download your music and movies using free shareware like soulseek and torrents

I pretty much agree with you when we're discussing major labels. But this is generally not the case with electronic music. Many of the small labels that cater to trance, techno, and downtempo are struggling these days because people download music without paying for it, including labels like Twisted, who release Shpongle. Many of these smaller labels are run by the very artists that you are purchasing music from (hint hint.) Smaller independent labels generally pay their artists more and release DRM-free music, hoping that trusting their customers will encourage them to buy the music. Labels perform an important function in releasing new music including handling distribution and promotions. And if you've ever run your own label you would know that it's a lot of work and deserving of payment.

So please save the rhetoric for examples where it's deserved ie major labels and mainstream music, because it doesn't apply here. Support your independent artists and buy CD's or pay for your downloads.

Here is the thing. Simon comes into this tribe. If you honestly think he would be down with you downloading his music as mp3's for free, then you should start a thread and ask him.

          "Who says downloading is stealing?"

If you downloaded someone else's hard work without their permisson you are stealing.

"In my books downloading for FREE is legit …"

Your books are wrong. Stealing from independent artists is shameful. We are not talking Brittney Spears here chycho, we are talking about very small labels that survive month to month just like the rest of us. It's shameful and it's wrong to steal someones hard work. Deep in your heart you know that is true. If not then please don't raise kids.

"I’ll go see the artists I love live when they come to town."

Here is the thing, I bet you don't. I bet you are one of the countless people Who show up to events wanting to trade a few moments work for a free entry. Afterall is this not the logical extension of the idea that information/music/art should be free from the shackles of the material and economic world. Goatrance the world over has seen exponential growth in terms of size of events and yet at the same time sales of this very same music has decreased more then 40% over the last 5 years. The more acceptable the notion that the artist should do what they do for the pure love of it and not for money, that trance and in fact all art should be free, the more that point of view will take root in our minds and in our local communities. We need to see money as a form of energy, rather then an evil capitalistic tool of oppression. It is both really, but it is also a means of exchanging our time/energy with each other. It takes a lot of physical/mental/creative and financial resources to create imaginative music. If we want to encourage growth and creativity then we have to contribute. There is no other way.

"That way I know the money is going to them and not a record company that scams people … (ticket master should be the next huge corporation to go and their time is coming soon I hope)"

Your words ring hallow chycho. Did you know that Shpongle (simon) is half owner of his own "record company" Twisted. Do you think you are saving Simon from his own label by stealing his music? What kind of logic is that? Have you even REALLY thought about this or are you just spouting some ramblings you picked up off of some major downloading website talking about downloading U2. These are regular mates like you and me owning these small labels, not some faceless corporate monsters. Get honest with yourself. If you are going to steal at least be honest with YOURSELF and know you are a petty thief.

The rest of your rant is not worth addressing as it addresses major labels and mainstream artists and is a strawman argument as it is not relevant when it comes to discussing the merits of stealing from small independent labels and artists.

Wake up and be honest with yourself.

I don’t recall the original post about “stealing music” mentioning independent labels only. I believe it was a general comment and thus my reply was a general comment about downloading.

As for what you think I do … lol … hate to burst your bubble, but I go see shows and if I love the artists I go se them multiple times … “string cheese incident” 5 time … “Ben Harper” 5 times … “toots” 3 times … lets see lets see … hmmm … hell I just bought tickets to see Bjork at dear lake park in Vancouver and that cost me a cool $123.50 (for 2 tickets)… so for you people that buy CD’s and skip the shows I say get off your high horse and your asses, and attend the shows because the artists make more money from shows then they do from CD’s and it encourages them to travel more and perform … and it also gives them energy and helps them create better music …

As for buying CD’s … welcome to the new revolution … technology has changed the industry and artists need to come up with different ways make money then selling CD’s only. Those artists that try to hold on to the old ways and the old market will go the way of the dinosaurs. Technology has changed things and artists/people need to adapt or die a slow death and this goes for Simon as well (even though I love his music and philosophy).

All you have to do to find the answer is look at some of the greatest artists of our time … “The grateful Dead” not only didn’t care about people “stealing” their music they encouraged it … and they are and will always remain to be one of the greatest bands that ever existed (they were also one of the largest money making bands of all time)… if you want another example take “Metallica” … I was one of the first 300,000 people that got an email from their lawyers threatening me with a lawsuit if I continued to download from Napster (remember them?) … well after realizing they were complete dick heads I deleted all their music and tell anyone that listens to then how much of a bunch of whiny losers they are … most people, when they do the research realize that they are a dead group and deserve no loyalty and end up deleting their music … in essence they committed suicide when they pulled that shit … Metallica lost half their fans by that stunt and they never recovered … as it should be …

So in summary … download music, sample it for as long as you want, and when the musicians come to your area go see them and send them your love … very simple really … CD buyers “support” the artists by buying CD’s … concert goers support the artists by going to shows

Thats the original post bro. Asking for free electronic music downloads. Music from indepependent labels. Sorry your moral ground isn't quite as solid as you once thought. Truth is you're promoting stealing energy from the musicians you love, but you're so caught up in your dogma that you can't see the truth in front of your face.

The sad thing is that most electronic musicians don't make money doing shows. Going on tour for smaller groups is a way to promote album sales and often means losing money in the process. Maybe not for the mainstream musicians you mention, but they're not the topic on this forum nor this discussion.

BTW everyone knows bands on tour make money on t-shirt sales, not ticket sales. And I don't hear you advocating buying t-shirts.

Fun :-) … The debate to download or not to download … it’s almost like asking people which side of the egg to break (Gulliver’s travels) … fun until someone looses an eye that is

The simple fact is that any creator that thinks downloading will stop is mistaken. That goes for music, videos, written word, or graphics … it’s time for people to change the model they use to do business in and grow with the technology.

Here is an idea on how to make a shit load of money … next time Simon, or any other artist does a show, why not webcast it and charge $1 to connect (or what ever will generate money) … here is another idea (along the lines of grateful dead … still no reply about this I see) … tell people that it’s okay to record your shows and start to spread the word about you … Maybe then trance/goa will become mainstream … there are so many alternatives to making money then the old school method … it’s a joke … the world changes and so must we …

If you feel like making apple money by downloading itunes then by all means go right on ahead … it’s just too bad and a waste of money as far as I’m concerned

Simon … come to Vancouver please … I’ll even run around and sell tickets for you … one way to get lots of tickets sold would be to allow people to video the show as well … shit I’ll even be there with my camcorder

Ps. I don’t sit on any higher “moral ground” … it’s just a different perspective of what reality should be … and man do I sleep well at night :))

Albeit, it is a bit tasteless to bring this subject up on a forum about an independent artist. But I see your point chycho. I've managed independent bands and dj's are have been involved with "the industry". It's shady on alot of levels. Even the independent. Buying downloads is great especially when you do so from the label/distributor itself. Which, with psytrance/psy-chill/ambient it's VERY EASY to do.

But that's not to say that it's possible forever. Like most music, it has a shelf life. So what now? This is why I think SHARING is caring. If I have a track that I love and another dj or performer wants to use it. I trade. Yes, I said TRADE. This is how digital music is distributed on the lower level. It's no different than years ago when I saw a dj throw down a track I liked and he/she would hand it to me. It was that, or I had to hunt it down at a shop. If the record was out of print, then it got even trickier.

Then there's the economics of it all. Which I'd rather not get into because it truly is a subject all it's own. Consider the "nobody" who doesn't have any other distribution power other than online. Then what?

To be honest, this debate is trite. Ever since the days of early radio has industry "professionals" fought against the technological distribution of music. It wasn't until they discovered creative means to use it that they benefited.

I buy directly from Twisted =) I trade tracks with my DJ buddys and we give away free downloads. To its as simple as voting with my time and money. I vote for Twisted buy buying from them dirctly I want them to be supported finachally, because love their music and the soul thats behind it. So I trade once in a while too.

A DJ buddy gave me a copy of a Telefon tel aviv albulm. I found out that I loved their work so I went and bought the other album and a single. The same is true with Boards of Canada. My friend comes to me and says somthing like, "Dude, you'll love this! Tell me what you think." I listen to it, and ofcourse I bought 4 other albulms. Same story for Shpongle. "Whats their name? Say it again." (hahaha) "Holy shit this stuff is awesome!" Now I find my self buying every collaberative project Simon P ever reasesed.

"Why are CDs in the UK so much more than here in the states?... I dont care I know that the money in going to a good place."

I suppose my entire post was a redundant reflection of whats already been posted, but Im one of those 'nobodys' and from my perspective trading seems to work, steeling doesnt. Where do you draw the line? Its not a rhetorical question. Everone draws a line some where.

      LONG LIVE SHPONGLE!!!

SPONGLE 4 is on its way, fuckin buy it bitches! ahahaha =)

Buy Last Days of Gravity too. LONG LIVE YOUNGER BROTHER!!!!
